Motor Vehicle Insurance

Insurance terms can sometimes be confusing. It is not uncommon for people to have coverages they don't understand. Here you can learn about the basic coverages so you will be able to decide what coverages you need.

  • Liability Coverage- Covers losses that an insured person is legally liable for due to negligence or other situations outlined in a home or vehicle insurance policy. Liability coverage applies to both home and vehicle insurance.

  • Comprehensive Coverage- Comprehensive covers events out of your control: theft, vandalism, hitting an animal, glass breakage, fire, and weather-related incidents. Collision coverage protects against damage to your car from hitting another vehicle or object, regardless of fault. Some insurers, including Progressive, require you to carry comprehensive if you purchase collision, however you may carry comprehensive coverage separately.

  • Collision Coverage- Collision coverage helps pay to repair or replace your vehicle if it's damaged in an accident with another vehicle or stationary object like a tree, guardrail, or fence. It can also cover damage resulting from a single-car accident, such as a rollover. Note that collision is a specific coverage on your policy, not a type of insurance, and is usually required if you lease or finance your car.

  • Medical Payments- Medical is an optional insurance coverage that pays for reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for covered persons. These expenses must be incurred as a result of an auto accident.

  • Personal injury protection- PIP is a coverage in which the auto insurance company pays, within the specified limits, the medical, hospital and funeral expenses of the insured person, people in the insured vehicle and pedestrians struck by the insured vehicle. PIP coverage is typically available in no-fault automobile insurance states.

Now that you've learned more about the different types of coverages available, you are probably ready to find a policy that works for you. The best way to do this is to work with an independent agency that will allow you to compare insurance quotes from multiple insurance providers. By doing this you make sure you are getting the highest coverages for the lowest price and only provide your personal information to one representative!
